Hey !" It´s me again. Class this week have been full. It seems like alot was always going on. We were locked out of our rooms for about an hour one morning. Then when we finally did get in the classroom , the professor was in fast forward the entire time. That was not fun. Especially since we are covering new material. REWIND. In lexico, we are working on descriptions, clothes, and then directions. That was a little confusing at first. I´m still working out a few kinks. We also covered foods and time. That part was much better for me. We listened to a Spanish song in Prof. Merce class and also other activities to pick out important information. I can´t seem to make out the words . I get everything I´m not supposed to.

I missed the tutoring session because of the tour, but afterward I went to the computer lab to get some homework done. For the first time for me it was actually comfortable in there. It was not overcrowded and not to hot either. Actually, the weather here has been surprising. I thought it was going to be very hot, but in the morning I need a light jacket. To bad I didn´t bring one. On another note, the stay with my host mom is getting better and better. We converse more and she told me that she works. She has been trying to explain the social security system here, because that is her employer. I think the system here is superb.

The last full weekend in Spain has arrived and out of all the things to do this weekend, I´ll be in Salamanca studying. The time has really flown by. I would like to have gone somewhere else, but things sometimes don´t work out for a reason. Maybe I´ll do some sightseeing and also the very last of my souvenir shopping. I have a few more items to try to buy for friends and family. It all depends. Maybe or maybe not. Angela and I are planning to meet up on Saturday morning. It´ll be wonderful to be out in the morning and not have to go to class.

Tonight my senora and I talked for a long time. I understand the importance of practicing with other people. She corrects me all the time and I appreciate the help. She understands that I´m struggling with the placement of the words. I leave out the small words some of the time. When she doesn´t understand I get my dictionary and start over again. My pronunciation is lacking and needs much improvement. Its all a learning process. That what I´m here for.

Classes are moving fast it seems nowadays. We have covered so much in the grammar class and I am attempting to retain it all and practice at home. My host mom appreciates my efforts and I apprecate her patience. I´ve been trying to make it home a little earlier so that I can leave and go to the computer lab, or take a little longer siesta. That all depends on the events of the day. I´ve been extremely tired lately and alot of people here (Americans) have been getting ill. I really don´t want to be the next so I´m trying to do all I can just in case the bug gets me. The school should depfeinitely have more free computer access. It is entirely to long of a wait and not enough labs. I am sure they already are aware of this, but its the summer.

I have walked down a few streets that I were not previously on. I was looking for a few trinkets to take back home to my friends and family. It has been hard to find things that I think they would like. I just don´t want to buy a University t-shirt for everbody. I´ll keep looking and I´m sure something will catch my eye before I leave. I asked a merchant what was the deal with all the frog souvenirs. She explained that it was a Salamanca symbol that was on a famous statue at the University. I hope I translated that right.

The market was closer than I thought. It took about 5 minutes to get there by the Special bus, and I don´t mean the little yellow one. I mean the bus that only runs on Sundays to the market. The scene reminded me of downtown near Roosevelt where everyone is trying to bargain with you over something. People were yelling with the microphones. Sometimes I see things I like, other times I don´t. I did see some zodiac wristbands while walking around, but I didn´t get a chance to go back and get them. I forgot the isle they were on. Silly me. We sat down for a little snack and boy did that hit the spot. We caught the bus back around 1:20 or so and made it back to the Plaza España.

It was such a nice day. The wind wasn´t to bad, but it was enough to stay cool. Elida and I decided to sit in the park and we talked for about 90 minutes and didn´t realize it. There were a few creepy ones watching us, but we still laughed and kept right on talking. My mom kinda scolded me for being late for lunch. Oh well, it happens. She just fixed the table and then we talked. It is so good to have a host mom that I can interact with. Even though, we don´t completely understand each other all the time. It is a learning experience, in itself, trying to find other ways to get the messages across. She draws mini pictures, and we both laugh. I think she is or used to paint alot. There are a few paintings on the walls in the house with her name on it. She appears to be inspired by African art and music. There are alot of African figurines throughout the house also. Well, I don´t want her mad at me so I´m off to dinner. Chao!

After the study session on Tuesday Bianca and I decided to go out. I´m not much of a party person, but I figured I´d at least see some of what the night life had to offer. I guess it really depends on the club(s) you go to. I´m not much of a club hopper, but there are so many ones to choose from. We saw AnnMarie and she decided to kick it with us for a while. I wish I could dance, at least a little. Maybe POP, LOCK, and DROP it. LOL. At least some salsa, or something, standing against the way just isn´t going to work. I´m a Chicago girl, just not a typical one. Sue me. I´m me, nothing more and definitely not less. Well, I stayed out longer than I have since I been here. I´m in a new place and the new lady kinda reminds me of my granny, just not as old. I wouldn´t dare come in her house that late. It´s definitley a difference in culture, because there were a few oldies(but goodies) out getting they groove on two. I don´t know what the dance was called that they were doing, but at least they were trying. However, I did make a cameo apperance on the floor with Bianca and AnnMarie.

Later on AnnMarie went home and Bianca wanted to see the club named El Sabor. There really wa no one is there that night. At least at the other club, the DJ worked with us and played a few requests for us. It was fun for me considering I don´t go out. After El Sabor, I dediced to go home. I felt very strange going in at 2:30 am.
I wrote a little bit and then went to bed. I know I am going to be no good in class tomorrow. I wonder how people go out every night and still go to class and be active. I commend you.

Merce. Yo me pregunto qué.

He estado haciendo algunas observaciones.

Hopefully Bianca´s ankle has went down by now. She was really in pain on Saturday evening. My bod y is slightly sore, but I will be fine. I´ve already finished my homework for today and have started on my blogs for the week. We are still working on verbs in the present tense in grammar class. Lexico is getting better. I understand sightly more, but of course this is all a learning process and I am a sponge. We meet in the Anaya Plaza directly after my last class. I was informed that I would be moving into a new home. Thank God. The move is to take place this evening after the tutoring session but before dinner. This is such great news.

No siesta hoy.

Things are looking up already. I have gotten a fresh start for the week and fell confident that the move is going to work out fine. My new host mom has already taught me a few words and meanings. My room has a TV and a computer(probably no Internet) but at least now I can watch and listen to the TV shows. She has given me a key and we actually have communicated over dinner. I consider that to be a very important part of this whole process. I am grateful that she has invited me into her home. I will definitely have to get her a gift when I get back to the states as a token of her hospitality.

I understand that Spainish dishes are different, and I am open minded about different cultures but for about 2 to 3 days I have not eaten any meat. Oh, I forgot about the hot dog last night. After lunch, I went to the internet place in the Plaza Mayor. That took forever it seemed. i had alot of information to rewrite since the computters here seem to be on the fritz. Later, on I went home and strated writing a friend back home a letter. Stamps here are so expensive (.78€) that´s like almost a dollar. The postage is the same regardless of postcard or envelope. I mailed about 7 items. Well at least they can´t say I was not thinking about them. I have some homework/research to do for class and presentations etc. so I must plan the stragedy to get most of it done soon. Today was a very hot day to me. All the stores here are closed even the markets, and they only are open about 8 hours a day. That is very different than the states. They stay open late to try to get all the money they can, and forget a siesta.

I went back home and sat in my room. When Iris cam home we had dinner of french fries and over easy eggs. WOW! We had to go out to eat something because that did not hit the spot. I just wanted to go out to get some fresh air. It was a quiet night. Another thing I noticed was the fact that the city workers pick up trash at night. I have heard them out at 1:00 in the morning. The streets are washed aand cleaning just about every night. I wonder how this is managed considering water is considered expensive. Well tomorrow offically starts week 2 of school and I must get ready. I have to work on my word placement.

A group of us went to Avila this weekend. It was definitely a day to remember in more ways than one. I´m glad I went to Carrefour for some food yesterday, because the lunch that my host mom packed left something to be desired. FOOD! I do appreciate her efforts, but that lady is a trip. How does she expect people to function with sufficient substance? Anyway, enough about her. I don´t want to give her any more of my good energy.

Avila is very beautiful to me, but I am a scenic persons and enjoy the country life. It is so obvious. It has vast amounts of hills and countryside. On the other side, the hills can be ruff for a girl like me. I think I wore the proper attire, (meaning gym shoes, comfortable clothes) but maybe I have gotten used to the city life with the paved streets and not so many hills. Who knows? The castle wall was similar to the way I imagined and I felt like a fairly princess at the top. Coming down was different. LOL. It is so amazing how they have preserved the walls and churches in the places that I have seen thus far. After all that walking , we were hungry. We decided that we would return to where we first started. We ate a little bit of lunch. It had stated to rain, but since I haven´t been able to watch TV, I was not prepared. Bianca and I were tired, kinda cold, and very sleepy so we walked back to the train station and came back home.

Today is Thursday and the weekend is almost here. My classes are getting a little bit better daily. However, my home situation is an entirely different issue. I am trying to communicate that I receive free laundry service, but I am not successful because she wants to charge me 11€. Hopefully, that will be addresses as well as the other concerns. I have faith that it all will work out soon. Some people in my group will be on excursions this weekend. Some of them are already completely booked. Thus far, the tutoring sessions have been extremely helpful for me. I know everyone is at a different level, but it helps to grasp the concept with their explanations. I enjoy talking walks around the city after dinner when it has cooled down a lot. Regardless of the time people still continue to stare.

My classmates are from Turkey, Canada, Holland and the U.S. I´m very grateful that the chancellor decided include the CCC´s in these study programs. I don´t think I have been exposed to so many different cultures in my life. My Lexico teacher had us playing BINGO to practice saying the numbers. I did not win. We reviewed relationship in Prof. Merce class and more numbers in lab. 5 hours is a long time to have class straight without a break. Some of the other programs are 3 or 4 hours which seems better because you are not burnt out so much, and also have enough time to make it home for lunch at 2 pm. My host mom seems slightly agitated that we all don´t eat together. My class ends between 2:15 and 2:30. I went to the library directly after lunch to get more work done.

In my first class of Spanish grammar I received my schedule. Luckily, my professor (Yolanda) does not speak rapidly. I understand most of her questions and statements. The next professor (Carmela) is slightly different, she speaks very little English and speaks very fast that the whole class looks in shock. I hope that after a few days I´ll feel more comfortable and will be able to pick up more. The third teacher (Merce) seems nice. She tries to help us understand the context of her questions. I like that fact that she uses the chalkboard. I am a visual learner and I can usually figure the word out once it is written. My first 3 classes are in the same building. I am pleased about that. The listening lab with professor Manuela is going to be very necessary for me to get the pronunciation of the words.

In the EE.UU I know there will be a party going on. I think there will be one here as well. I am studying verbs in grammar class in the present tense and -arse ending. A few other people from the group have joined my level. Some of them are in a few of my classes. I feel good that I actually know what I´m doing in class. However, I am not used to using the vosotros forms. I have homework in all my classes. Prof. Merce just wants us to practice speaking Spanish. A lot of the words sound similar. No tutoring today, because information session about excursions and extra classes. The cooking class seems interesting, but I will not have time for studying and that. Later, my roommate and I are thinking about going out tonight. I called a few people back home in the states and then went to bed.

I was a litle worried about my luggage, but when I arrived home for dinner it was there. YEAH! Later on that night I scanned the textbook to see if any of it was familiar. Tomorrow is the first day of class and I am excited and nervous. I´m sure I will have great professores. It´s 10:30¨here and its still not dark outside. I took a small nap and woke up in the middle of the night. I hope I will get used to the time change soon. The night was surprisely quiet considering this is a school town. I live near Pablo Picasso park and I went to sit in the park when I couldn´t sleep.

I tried to have a small conversation with my host mom today. It was extremely hard, because she speaks no English and I used the dictionary and everything. I felt like I was playing Scattegories or something. Luckily, my roommate came in and filled in the gaps. I was so grateful. It was fun and definitely worth it. I hope that I am able to watch some TV to get more exposure to the language. My host mom smokes in the house and I fell strange asking her to not do it near my room. Hopefully, I will find a way to communicate that as well as te fact that I do not eat pork in a successful way without being rude.
Well, all in all this has been ok, besides the fact that 3 of my fellow students including myself had pieces or all of our luggage lost. The trip was long and very tiring for the body. I was glad to be back on the ground. The ride to Salamanca was nice. The scenery kinda reminds of the countryside in the United States. When we arrived at the dropspot, we were greeted by our host families. My host mom´s name is Carmen and she seems nice. I will also have another student from Michigan staying with me. GOOD!

¡AH! Yo me olvidé de mencionar hermosa.

Overall, people seem to take things slow here. Eeryone is always out walking babies, young people and elders too. The grandparents seem to have the kids all the time. Maybe its me, but everyone seems to stare alot. I don´t think I´m that much different but maybe so. They don´t speak, they just look. Most cars here are very small, with the exception of a few SUV´s. I guess that is because gas in expensive and there is not alot of space. There are alot of underground garages, which seem to be very beneficial. Drivers are more polite than I expected. They stop for you most of the time, but in the U.S a person would get ran over easily.
